Furthermore, the Directorate administers the  veterinary emergency service provided by all MAFA veterinary officers who work on a 24/7 roster basis to deal with any emergency related to the food chain, either on-farm, for animals or products entering the territory of Malta that need to be released without delay,  or any urgent investigations.

National Veterinary Emergency Service for pets and small animals Project: This is a new project recently launched to cater for  emergency service especially after hours and during public holidays. It includes a triage system, dedicated out-of-hours clinics, and the state-funded emergency veterinary care support programme. In genuine emergency cases, the latter reimburses pet-owners the cost of an emergency consultation.
